That Actually Work

From the outside, you probably look like you have it together.

You’re capable. You get things done. People rely on you.
And in a lot of ways… it does work.

But it takes more effort than it seems like it should.

There’s a lot of pushing.
Staying on top of things. Keeping track of everything.
Trying not to drop anything important.

When holding it all together gets heavy

And over time, that starts to wear on you.

Not because you’re doing something wrong—
but because of how you’ve had to make it work.

Most approaches will tell you to be more consistent.
More disciplined. More organized.

But if you’re honest…
you’ve already been trying really hard.

That’s not the issue.

This is where we take a different approach.

Working with your brain, not against it

Instead of pushing harder, we look at what’s underneath all of that.

How your brain works. What your nervous system is doing.
What’s actually getting in the way of following through (especially on the uninteresting projects and tasks).

Then we build from there.
So things can feel a little more steady.
A little less like you’re constantly managing everything.

You don’t have to become a different person.

But you also don’t have to keep carrying it the same way.

Meet Jen Barnes, MSW, LICSW — ADHD Therapist for Women

Hi, I’m Jen — a licensed clinical social worker specializing in ADHD therapy for adult women.

I was diagnosed in adulthood, so I understand this from both sides.

What it looks like to have it together on the outside…
and how much is actually happening underneath that.

The overthinking. The pressure. The constant mental load.
The way things can feel harder than they “should,” even when you’re doing well.

That experience is part of what shapes how I work.

Today, I provide ADHD-informed therapy for women who want support that works with their nervous system, honors their lived experience, and helps them build a life that actually fits how their brain works.

With over 25 years in the mental health field, my work integrates clinical training with a deep understanding of how ADHD actually shows up in women’s lives.

What Changes When ADHD Support Actually Fits

I used to get overwhelmed and stuck in fight, flight, or shutdown for days… sometimes weeks. I didn’t realize it didn’t have to be this way. Now I have tools to regulate my nervous system and actually face things that used to feel overwhelming and scary.

A Different Way to Start

We don’t start with fixing everything

We start with what’s actually going on for you right now. What’s been feeling hard, what’s on your plate, and what keeps getting in the way—without judgment.

We make sense of what’s underneath it.

Your brain, your nervous system, your patterns. So it’s not just “try harder”… it actually makes sense why things have been difficult.

We find what works for you

Not a one-size-fits-all system. We experiment and build approaches that fit how your brain works and what your life actually looks like.

We move forward in a way that feels doable

So you’re not constantly pushing or starting over… but making steady progress that actually sticks.

Questions You Might Be Wondering

Is this therapy or coaching?

Right now, I offer therapy for clients located in Minnesota, Colorado, and Wisconsin. If you’re outside of those states, I’m not able to work together at this time—but that may change in the future.

That’s actually really common. We’ll look at what’s underneath what hasn’t been working—your nervous system, your patterns, and how your brain operates—so we can find approaches that actually fit you.

You’re not the only one. We don’t ignore that—we work with it. Together, we build approaches that account for your energy, your capacity, and how your brain works so things feel more doable.

No. Many of the women I work with are capable and holding a lot together—but it’s taking a toll. You don’t have to wait until things fall apart to get support.

Yes. Most of the women I work with are capable, responsible, and doing a lot—often more than people realize. On the outside things may look fine, but internally it can feel very different.

You can explore the different ways to work together and choose what feels like the best fit. From there, we’ll take the next step together in a way that feels manageable.

ADHD is a core focus of my work, especially for women. We also look at things like emotional overwhelm, nervous system patterns, and the impact of past experiences—because they’re often connected.
